I just found this great article on Mashable that you might enjoy: Five Tips to Maximize Your Brand’s Facebook Reach. “The bottom line is that Facebook wants people consuming content, so its algorithm rewards the brands that create the coolest content.” If you think you aren’t cool enough, here are some points to focus on.

1. Know Your Audience

A no-brainer, right? But study the Insights on your page — at what time of day are fans reading your posts? Post more during that time of day! Which posts are the most responded to? Respond in kind by posting the content that they’ve shown interest in.

“Catering specifically to your audience will result in more engagement and increase your chance of appearing in a fan’s News Feed.”

2. Practice Brevity, Be Topical and Don’t Play Hard to Get

Be succinct as well as relevant in your posts. People won’t read long posts. Users respond to content that is timely — referencing current events, holidays, the weather (ha!) — whatever might be top of mind for that the day. Readers want to engage, but they need the opportunity. Ask them directly to “like” or comment. When they do, it will show up in their news feed, which will increase your number of viral visibility, which is what you’re after!

3. Mind Your Content

Quality content is still king on Facebook. Photos rank as the most engaging type of content, so if you want to say something, can you combine it with an image? I will chime in here to say: keep your images original, try not to steal images off the web and post them as your own. I’ve noticed some pages doing this, and it’s pretty obvious. Stick with your brand direction when it comes to your imagery and language on Facebook. It’s easy to see inauthentic posts.

4. Engage the Engagement

Like or comment back on comments! Fans like to be acknowledged, and it will probably encourage them to engage more frequently in the future. Increased interaction is the key to visibility.

5. Turn Your Fans’ Friends into Fans

“Friends of fans are extremely important — they are more likely to visit a brand’s Facebook Page or website, purchase a brand’s products and become fans themselves.” Friends of Fans can be reached through the Facebook Ticke. Keep your fans interacting with your brand, and their friends will see all “liking” activity, comments and posts in the top right of their news feed.

You can also place Facebook Ads to target friends of fans. Facebook Ads are not just a way to reach your fans’ friends, but also your competitor’s fans and your own fans. Of course you have to pay for this, but those who know agree: “In order to significantly extend reach and watch your messaging and branded content spread to 90% of your fan base and beyond it, an investment in Facebook advertising is necessary.”
