Some of you may know that I’ve had a love affair with Portland, Oregon, for some time now. It started in the summer of 2000 when I accidentally moved there, misguided by romance and student loans. If you’ve ever been to the Pacific Northwest in July or August, you know that it’s a beautiful time of year there. I had a fabulous summer, and ended up living there for four years, making amazing friendships and sticky business contacts. They insist on my frequent return, and who am I to turn them down? Thus, I am working from here for two weeks, and taking the next week off. Yep, a Portlandia stay-cation!
There’s a lot to love about Portland, the first is that spring starts early. While it’s a little rainy here (as usual, from October to June), the daffodils and crocus are a few weeks ahead of New York, and the temperature is far more moderate. Getting out for a hike is no problem, even in the drizzle. And the picture-taking opportunities in nature are abundant.
A second great thing is Portland shopping. Did you know that there is no sales tax in Oregon? Nope! That’s why I bring an extra suitcase to haul back some goodies. Lot’s of unique, crafty, fun boutiques.
I think my very favorite thing about Portland is the food, beer and wine. From VooDoo Donuts (pictured above), to pick your own fruits and veggies, to the wine trail through the Willamette Valley and innumerable small-craft breweries, it’s impossible to return from PDX with the waistline intact. So I usually give in to the goodies.
All of this is to say that don’t expect to hear from me next week. I’ll be busy enjoying Portland’s many delights!
